Local Secrets – Port Douglas with Doug

This week I chatted with Doug, from our sales team in the beautiful Port Douglas.  Doug is a proud WorldMarkSP Owner and has had the pleasure of many WorldMarkSP holidays.

How many of our resorts have you visited?

Wanaka, Sydney, Coffs,  Kirra, Surfers, Marcoola, Golden Beach and Rotorua….and I am very lucky as I get to visit my hometown resort everyday.

Are you a Port Douglas local?

I’m a Kiwi, having spent most of my life in Auckland, but Yvonne and I left home just over 4 years ago.  We were in Hong Kong for 18 months, and then Thailand for a year before coming here.

What do you love about Port Douglas?

I have the best team in the country and we work at the best resort.  It takes me 4 minutes to get to work, we have no traffic lights, in fact we really don’t have any traffic.  No parking restrictions, and 10 months of the year the best weather…We are the only place in the world with two heritage listed parks.

Where’s the best place to get coffee?

A small shop in the main street called Whileaway.  It’s a bookshop with great coffee.

Best Kept Secret?

The Lady Douglas. It’s a replica steam boat that goes out each day, from the Marina, at 4.30pm for a one and a half hour trip.  You will be greeted with fresh fruit and  a glass of wine or a beer.  You will see wild crocs, lots of wildlife and the sun setting over the Daintree rain forest.

Best place for families?

The Ramada of course.  Family friendly restaurant, beautiful pool that is warm 12 months of the year.  5 mins walk from the beach and the best resort team at your service.

Best time to visit?

April through December.  Jan/Feb and March can be a bit damp, but it’s still beautiful.

Although Doug dislikes talking about himself, I managed to learn a little something.  He says ‘I’ve been married to the most fantastic person for 32 years and have two wonderful kids aged 24 and 28.  I spent 10 years in the NZ Police and then grew strawberries commercially for 15 years’.

Next time you’re in Port Douglas, ask Doug for some tips on growing strawberries.! 🙂

Doug & Yvonne enjoy many holidays!
