This week I chatted with Alan, from our Sales Team in Wanaka. Alan often sends me information about what’s happening around Wanaka to share with Owners on social media, so I knew he would be be a great person to give us the inside tips on the beautiful town of Wanaka!
How long have you lived in Wanaka?
We moved here in Feb of 2013 from Lake Tahoe/Reno area which is very similar. Lake Tahoe is half in Nevada half in California.
What is it about Wanaka that you love?
The tremendous sense of community, the peacefulness. We always joke with the guests and ask them if they know what day it is. The scenery is amazing, the light changes the way the surrounding hills and mountains look at different times of the day and time of year.
Where’s the best place to get a coffee?
If I pick just one I won’t be able to look café owners in the eye….anyplace in town, we make a good coffee here at the resort both at the bar and in the owners lounge.
What would you recommend families on holiday in Wanaka do?
Just 10 minutes drive from Wanaka, the stunning lakefront township of Lake Hawea is a fantastic destination in its own right. You can give the kids that real, laid-back kiwi holiday experience with the focus on outdoor play, swimming, fishing, water sports, family bike tracks and summer evening barbeques, all seconds away.
Best time to visit?
Every season has it’s appeal…winter snow sports…summer lake activities, trekking, cycling. Fall and spring slow and easy!
I convinced Alan to share with me a little bit about his life before Wyndham. He was in the music industry for years, touring the world as a Production Manager, Stage Manager & Audio Engineer. Bands included Huey Lewis & the News and ZZ Top. (I’d heard he’d toured with The Doors, however Alan tells me he was ‘not quite old enough’ back then, but did see them once at Berkley Community Theatre in the 60’s!)
Alan is also very passionate about search and rescue. He was involved at the Operations Management level of searches in the USA and is part of the Wanaka Landsar organisation these days.
