On 22 February 2011 our lives underwent a dramatic change. Our city, Christchurch, was hit by a devastating earthquake causing death and destruction and leaving much of the city without water, power and other basic necessities for weeks. Two and a half years later, the reconstruction is only beginning to get into full swing.
Just over a year after the quake, we decided we needed a break from the constant pressure and anxiety of living in a damaged city. We called our friend Shiva at Wyndham Resorts Denarau Island to explain our situation. “No problem,” he said in his usual friendly manner, “leave it to me and I’ll arrange everything for you.” Sure enough, a short time later we received a call saying that he’d organised a week’s accommodation at this fabulous resort.
It was now up to us to arrange the travel to get there and begin our week of rest and relaxation. For those that dont know, “Fiji time” is just another way to say chilling out and here we were set up for a week of Fiji time!!
When we arrived Shiva was there with his big smile to greet us. The room was up to Denarau’s high standard, despite the resort undergoing maintenance and upgrading (Fiji had recently had it’s own problems with Mother Nature). The staff were pleasant and helpful as always.
The resort is able to offer an enticing menu at the poolside restaurant or self catering with a fully equipped kitchen in your apartment. Activities are also available for those that want to take advantage of them. My wife enjoyed the onsite massage and we both had fun on the jet ski.
Our day usually started with an hours exercise in the well equipped gym. Most of the rest of my time was spent either reading or listening to music under one of the many lounges located under the palm trees on the beach – just the tonic needed!!
The week ended all too quickly, but being members of the Wyndham family of owners we knew it was something we could, and would, repeat in the near future.
