It’s been a little bit rainy, cold and miserable over the last week or so on the Gold Coast – something as a local I’m really not prepared for! My boys have been home on school holidays (my ‘big’ boy works at a school) and although they had a few lovely snuggly movie days – they started to go a little stir crazy! So we put our minds together and came up with some activities to bring some rainy day sunshine! Perhaps some of these might work for you as well!
1. Swimming in the Rain – My first instinct is to avoid rain at all costs. But remember when you were a kid, and jumping in the pool or swimming in the ocean during a rain shower was so much fun? The rain usually warms you up, and as an adult it’s one of the most relaxing things I’ve found! My boys take the rain + water concept a little further and now even go stand up paddleboarding in the rain!
2. Tag! – For Christmas, we each got a special Nerf gun that allowed us to connect our ipods to them and play Laser Tag. When it’s raining, we use them to play a beefed up form of hide and seek. The object is to electronically tag your opponent without them seeing you (no running or breaking household items required)! On sunny days we play it in the park – but when we’re forced to do it inside, I can focus much more as I’m not forever worried about losing sight of Hendrix! Ladies, if you’re like me, you may find the idea of a shoot ’em up game off putting, however I can confirm it’s fun, and a little cathartic!
3. Handstand Challenge!. – Or any kind of challenge really. What Jamie did was challenge Hendrix to hold a handstand for 30 seconds, with a prize of $1 for each time he did it. Sounds easy, but it’s really hard! Great exercise, great energy release and ensures he’s tired at night. We chose handstands because we have a kid whose dream is to play Rugby League for the Warriors one day – and we want him to be strong to take all the hard tackles he’ll get while he’s getting there! The simple concept could be applied to anything though.
Thankfully, it’s a beautiful sunny day on the Gold Coast today, so the skateboards and footy will be back out – but if you’re on a school holiday with your family, and it’s raining, I hope something here helps bring some sunshine.
