September 2012, and we return to Denerau Island Resort after ten years spent exploring the rest of Wyndham’s world. A decade ago we were here as a couple, and now we are back as a family. Will it be as ripper and relaxing as I recall?
Transfer from NAN takes only minutes, but as we cross the bridge to the island I already feel light-years away from the everyday world. Everything I fondly remember about Denerau is there: the marvellous gardens, the manicured golf course and the roads lined with lofty, leaning palm trees like a laid-back honour guard of giant dreadlocked Rastafarians.
Worldmark’s resort is expanding, but has lost none of its affable, tropical charm. Friendly staff, perfectly-themed apartments and of course the spectacular pool with its cocktail of attributes (the swim-up bar being the little umbrella on top).
From our beautiful base we enjoy a tremendous week of rest and recreation, sailing, snorkelling, getting muddy, and simply having fun. Racing around the bay together on a jet ski, the bumpy waves cause my young daughter’s head to beat a staccato rhythm against my chin, yet I just can’t stop grinning.
The truth is, to have a memorable holiday on Denarau it doesn’t matter whether you’re a couple or a family or anyone. As for myself I may well have left there a kilo or two heavier, but my spirit is much, much lighter.
