As the plane descended through the Southern Alps, I caught my first glimpse of the magical landscape that inspired Lord of the Rings. Day one involved too small ski boots and my first ski lesson at Cardrona. The day was perfect and the aches and pains were soothed by the outdoor hot tub. Hubby and I perfected the sprint to the room… in the snow …with no shoes.
Our journey to Milford Sound included a snowball fight on the side of the road in avalanche country, the Homer tunnel, keeping Kia’s out of the car, and hiking. Other trip highlights include skiing at the Remarkables in a blizzard, carb-loading at Devil Burger, getting my father on the Shotover Jet to celebrate his 70th birthday, and watching my daughter play in the snow. At Treble Cone, I got a snowboarder stuck on my skis (which of course hubby captured on film) and he got to share a ski lift with members of the Austrian ski team.
We flew back to Sydney after spending a night in Christchurch, a city which lives in my dreams free from the scars inflicted on it a week later in the 2010 earthquake.
