A few years ago, we decided to visit the small Queensland community of Hervey Bay for our annual holiday because we had heard that Hervey Bay had great whale watching experiences.
Hervey Bay is situated on the Queensland coast, North of Noosa and is the closest mainland community to world famous, heritage listed Fraser Island. We booked the Wyndham resort near the marina and set about investigating the local tour companies. At the marina, we found an abundance of whale watching tour boats and we chose a large catamaran for our first whale watching adventure.
Our 4 hour cruise supplied lunch and refreshments and there were ample places around the boat for people to park themselves and enjoy the whale watching experience. It took approximately an hour to get out to Platypus Bay where the whales take up residence from September to November on their annual migration. As we traveled North along the Bay, the crew heard of a mother and baby frolicking along the eastern side of the bay. We all watched with great excitement for signs of the whales and were rewarded with views of not one but two mothers with their babies appeared beside our boat, investigating us with great curiosity!
Out came the cameras and we managed several quality photos of these amazing creatures as they played around our boat. We stayed and watched until they swam off elsewhere. It was now time for lunch and the boat started to head around the bay and back to the marina with many happy and smiling visitors on board.
