“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”
We’re all familiar with the age old saying Carpe diem, popularly translated ‘seize the day’. It’s become such a common phrase that it may no longer cause us pause…
This week I watched, along with millions of others, as Felix Baumgartner jumped from earth’s stratosphere (39km straight up), breaking the speed of sound as he fell for over 9mins – a world record for the highest freefall.
(You can watch the jump here – Freefall from the edge of space)
Whilst not inspired to leap from a tiny capsule, propelled to the edge of space by a balloon, prevented from crashing into the earth by only a piece of high tech silk… Baumgartner’s jump whispered to a little part of my soul “well, why not?”
It wasn’t just the jump that inspired me, it was the journey to the jump, the journey taken to make the most of the ‘day’ to ‘seize’ it, with both hands, and not let go.
Do something that you love
Baumgartner adventurous spirit inspired him to skydive, to BASE jump and to fly helicopters. His love for adventure was the drive to his world record jump.
I love people. I love spending time with people, making them happy, giving gifts and showing appreciation for the very real impact they have had on my life. The gift of time – of spending a weekend away, or catching up with friends, of visiting loved ones – this is it what I love to do.
Baumgartner’s jump was planned over years, with numerous practices, training and working through as many scenario’s as possible. Being prepared does not mean planning every minute detail and not moving forward until you can foresee every end; it is be prepared with the expertise, resource and knowledge to feel confident in tackling every eventuality.
I read – books on travel, on culture, biographies of innovative people. I learn – online, through study and by listening to people around me. Tapping in to resources online opens up a world of inspiration.
Baumgartner surrounded himself with people with expertise, with resources and with knowledge.
My support network is my family, my friends and my colleagues. And I intend to make sure they know how much they inspire me, and how much their support means!
At the very end – Baumgartner backed himself. And just like he knew he had set himself up as well as he could – I intend to back myself.
Our dreams and plans are our own and, well, if someone can do it – it may as well be you!
I am inspired to ‘seize the day’, to make of it what I will. I’ve started my plan to visit those I love and tell them how much they mean to me… I hope you can be inspired too!
